George Sedgwick was a carpenter. He built many houses which still stand. He built the interior of Portland Town Hall and some fine furniture which is still collected.

He died in his workshop next to his home at 137 Percy St, Portland on 18 Feb 1899 as a result of his clothing being caught in revolving machinery. His accident was while developing a way to bring fresh water by pump to every Portland house. See the linked obituary from the The Portland Guardian.
