In the 1851 census, Thomas and family are in Ripon, the birthplace of his wife. By 1861 the couple are in Guisborough strangely recorded with the surname Blackburn. In 1871 Mary again uses the surname Blackburn although the rest of the family are recorded as Sedgwicks

Daughter Sarah is a visitor in her half brother Robert's household in 1891.
