In the 1841 census Joseph is a police officer living in Middlesbrough with his son and a Hannah Sedgwick. Since Hannah was born in Yorkshire and Joseph and Robert 'out of county', it would seem that Hannah was a second wife rather than a sister of Joseph's.

It is very likely that Joseph was the individual baptised at Monk Hesledon in 1796 making him part of the strong catholic presence in Durham.
