Thomas Sedgwick [Thomas Sedgwick / Elizabeth Carey] Thomas was a merchant apparently working for the West and East India Companies. He is undoubtedly the individual who appears in an 1811 Directory as; Thomas Sedgwick, merchant, of 9, Clements Lane, Lombard Street In 1851 his widow Martha Sedgwick is living in St Pancras with daughter Sarah and in 1861 in Marylebone with her children William and Sarah Sedgwick. In 1871 and 1881 Sarah is described as an authoress - has anyone come across her work? Son Charles is believed to have emigrated to America and to have worked as a journalist in Boston. A census record has been found for him in 1900 showing that he first arrived in 1869. He is described as a widower whose father was born in England and his mother in Jamaica. He is found arriving in Boston in 1898 but an 1869 entry found shows a Charles Sedgwick, seaman, aged 20 arriving in New York. A mistake or a different Charles? Thomas junior is believed to have been associated with the Honourable East India Company and promoted the growth of mulberry trees for silk production in India. An additional three baptisms in 1818 of the children of a Thomas and Martha Sedgwick at St Gabriel, Fenchurch Street might connect to this family - John bn 1814, Edward bn 1816 and Jane bn 1818. New information makes it likelier that they belong to the same family. |
