William describes his birthplace as Mansfield or Boston, Lincolnshire depending on the year of the cenus returns. That there is a suitable baptism in Nottingham may be a coincidence but it seems the most likely answer based on the current evidence.

First wife Jane died in 1837.

In 1861 Ellen Brown (nee Sedgwick) aged 72 is boarding with the family. Ellen Sedgwick married Samuel Brown in Nottingham in 1818.

In 1871 he is described as a foreman and is living with his third wife, his daughters Mary and Minnie, his son Walter and three Smith step-daughters.

By 1881 his step children Ada and Maud are called Sedgwick in the census.
