According to Baine's Directory 1822, Matthew was a shoemaker. In 1841 Mary (aged 40) and children Hephzibah and Thomas are together in Brotherton - head of the house is a William Shirtcliffe and lodging in the house is a Michael Sherry (aged 28). In 1851 Hephzibah is lodging in Huddersfield with a Michael and Mary Sherry - Mary was born in Brotherton. A Mary Ledgwick (nee Shutliffe) married a Michael Sherry in York in 1842. Did Mary marry the lodger? Also in 1841, Thirza Sedgwick is living with a Mary Sedgwick (aged 45) in Pontefract - head of the house a William Shirtcliff. By 1851 she has married. Was Mary her mother (recorded twice in the census) or an aunt? Thomas was a tailors assistant and in 1851 is lodging in Doncaster. In 1861 and 1871 he is in Hulme, Lancashire and in 1881 in Stretford.. |
