Matthew was described as independant in 1841. In 1822 Baines Directory lists a Matthew Sedgwick of Dewsbury, linen draper.

A Matthew Sedgwick of Dewsbury was named executor of Reverend Thomas Sedgwick's will which was proved in 1828.
